Eliza MacLean Piggott was the daughter of Clare Jolly and Walter Joseph Piggott of Breckinridge County Kentucky. Eliza was married to U.S. Senator Thomas Rust Underwood on June 20, 1925 at Tynebrae, the country estate of Dr. & Mrs. William B. McClure in Lexington. Eliza and Thomas were the parents of two sons, Thomas Rust Underwood, Jr. born October 11, 1926 and Walter Joseph Piggott Underwood, Sr. born August 30, 1930.
Eliza was a Journalistic pioneer. She was the first female state editor of a Kentucky newspaper in 1919 when she was named to that position at the Lexington Herald. Eliza is a graduate of the University of Kentucky (Class of 1919) where she was the first female journalism graduate and first woman editor of both the UK student newspaper and yearbook. Member of the Mortar Board, Honoray Senior fraternity, Chi Omega sorority and the Theta Sigma Phi. Inducted in the University of Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame on March 12, 2004.
