Mary Lucie Douglas died at about nine months old, in Washington, D.C. and her body was placed "temporarily" in the Congressional Cemetery's "Public Vault" - Site #266, on September 26, 1853.
Sen. Stephen A. Douglas purchased a burial plot and arranged for the digging of her grave on January 2, 1856.
After more than two years in the Public Vault, Mary Lucie's remains were, at long last, laid to rest.
