Mary Lucie Douglas was born January 12, 1853, in Washington, D. C., the daughter of Martha Denny [Martin] and Senator Stephen Arnold Douglas. She was named for her maternal Grandmother Mary [Settle] Martin and maternal Aunt Lucinda Settle Martin.

Mary Lucie Douglas' mother died on January 19, 1853, and was taken from Washington, D. C. for burial in the Martin-Settle Cemetery in Rockingham Co., NC, in mid-April, 1853.

Mary Lucie Douglas died at about nine months old, in Washington, D.C. and her body was placed "temporarily" in the Congressional Cemetery's "Public Vault" - Site #266, on September 26, 1853.

Sen. Stephen A. Douglas purchased a burial plot and arranged for the digging of her grave on January 2, 1856.

After more than two years in the Public Vault, Mary Lucie's remains were, at long last, laid to rest.
