Followed in his father's footsteps and became a lawyer. He graduated from Georgetown university in 1869 and some years later became adjutant general of North Carolina. He came to Chicago in 1879 and became a member of the law firm of Becker & Douglas. In 1902 he married Mrs. Agnes MacDowell.
