(From our Benalto correspondent)
Benalto mourned the loss Wednesday, May 20, of Mrs. Minna Buchanan, proprietor of the Benalto hotel, who died early early Wednesday morning in the Red Deer hospital after a short illness. The flag flew at half-mast during the day in her memory. Funeral services, which were largely attended, were conducted by Rev. J.M. Campbell, Carstairs, formerly of Benalto, on Sunday afternoon at the Booster Hall. Interment was in the Gilby cemetery. The Gilby quartette, nephews of Mrs. Buchanan sang "The Old Rugged Cross," and a duet was sung by two nieces of Mrs. Buchanan, and Miss Ruth Kinna also sang.
Mrs. Buchanan was widely known and highly regarded in this community in which she took a keen interest. She was an active member of the local branch of the Canadian Red Cross Society, and was convener of the work committee. She was also a member of the Presbyterian Ladies' Aid and the Benalto Home and School Association.
Mrs. Buchanan was born in Estonia. She emigrated with her parents over 39 years ago to Canada, settling in the Eckville district. She attended the Red Deer High School and after a course at Camrose Normal School, taught school for a number of years in the district west of Red Deer. For three years prior to her marriage to V.B. Buchanan on May 8, 1920, she was a member of the bank staff at Eckville. Of recent years, Mrs. Buchanan had been proprietor of the Benalto hotel.
Mrs. Buchanan leaves her husband, V.B. Buchanan; a son, LAC John Buchanan, No. 2 Wireless School, R.C.A.F.., Calgary; a daughter, Mona, at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Kinna, Eckville and Ernest Kinna of Sylvan Lake, and one sister, Mrs. Charles Raabis of Eckville.
