Georgia Mauren Yaw Martyn

SANTA FE — Georgia Mauren Yaw Martyn, 80, of Santa Fe, Texas went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 13, 2010, at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center.

Georgia was born on April 12, 1930, in Buna, Texas to Edith Yaw Elmore and Thomas Yaw. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Emma Yaw Reed, her brothers Thomas Ray Yaw and Gregory Yaw, her stepfather Joe Elmore, and her husband Henry F. Martyn.

Georgia graduated from Sulphur High School in 1948 and attended college at Louisiana Technical College. She married her husband Henry “Hal” Martyn in 1952. She had been a resident of Santa Fefor 28 years and previously of Glassboro, New Jersey. Georgia worked at Galveston College and The Galveston Daily News in the Classified Department. She also worked for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Galveston where she retired in 1998 to live her life to the fullest.

In her extra time while raising her family she taught 4H, cooking, sewing and anytime you needed an ear she was there with many words of wisdom. She was very active in her church, St. John’s Lutheran of Santa Fe. Many times you would call the house to receive an answer machine because she was out shopping, gardening, meeting with friends for lunch, or spending time with her grandchildren. She loved taking road trips, especially to San Antonio where she visited many years in a row.

Survivors include her sister Faynell Norris of Sulphur, Louisiana; brothers Kyle “Gene” Yaw and wife Carolyn “Corkie “of South Gate, California, Marcus Yaw and Emerson “Mickey” Yaw of Port Allen, Louisiana; daughter Georgia Sharon Steele-Jones of Santa Fe, Texas; son Christopher Steele and Soledad of Los Alamos, New Mexico; daughter Frederica Steele-Garvin and husband Laurie of Fayetteville, North Carolina; son Thomas Matthew Steele and wife Jackie of Tucson, Arizona; daughter-in-law Colonel Theresa Sullivan Steele of Los Alamos, New Mexico; grandchildren Tyron Garvin of Savannah, Georgia; Errol Steele-Jones and wife Myra of Santa Fe, Texas and Gregory Steele-Jones and wife Barbara of Santa Fe, Texas; her adopted family the Tan and Kim Heng Svay family of Chattanooga, Tennessee; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, relatives, and friends.

Visitation was held on Friday, December 17, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Carnes Funeral Home, 3100 Gulf Freeway, Texas City, TX 77591.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 18, 2010, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 13136 Highway 6, Santa Fe, TX 77510.
