Lyle was born on December 19, 1928, the son of Floyd and Carrie (Soderberg) Kilbourn on the homestead in Berthold. Lyle entered the United States Army on June 25, 1951, so his brother Dale would not have to serve. Lyle served during the Korean Conflict and was honorable discharged on June 24, 1954. After his discharge he returned to North Dakota and went to work for Nash Finch Co. and later retired in 1990. Lyle also farmed his family homestead.
