Funeral services were held at Mountain View United Methodist Church with Reverend Bill Burch officiating. Burial was at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. Arrangements are by Woodstock Funeral Home.
Howard was born in Moose Lake, Minnesota, to LeRoy and Ebba Hellerstedt July 8, 1947. He graduated from Moose Lake High School in 1965 and began his long military career as a cadet at United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. On his commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Howard married Barbara Ann Erikson July 19, 1969 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He served as an officer in the Army for 21 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1990 having served around the world, and earning the Bronze Star for valor in Viet Nam and the Legion of Merit.
He began his second career as a professional engineer, working for local, state, and federal governments as employee and consultant. He retired again in 2010 in Newport News, Virginia, having achieved registration as a Certified Construction Manager (CCM). He and Barbara moved to metropolitan Atlanta in August 2013 to be closer to family.
Howard is survived by his wife Barbara; sons and daughters-in-law Mark (Meg), Ryan, and Jeffrey (Tiffany); sisters Ann, Mary, Lois, Carol and Amy; grandsons Kevin, John, Matthew, Bradley and granddaughters Brook, Ashley, Micayla, and Caroline.
