Charles J. Nelson, 68, of 564 Nineteenth avenue, Rock Island, died at 4:53 last evening in St. Anthony's hospital. He had been assistant foreman in the frame department of the Rock Island Sash & Door works since 1936 and formerly was superintendent of the J. Peterson Co., Rock Island store and office fixture firm.
Mr. Nelson worked Tuesday but became seriously ill Wednesday. He was taken to the hospital Thursday night.
He was born July 5, 1871, in Smoland, Sweden. He came to Rock Island when 19 years old and worked at the wood works on Eleventh street and Sixth avenue. Later, he moved to East Moline where he was co-proprietor of the old East Moline Sash & Door works. He moved to Galesburg in 1914 and became superintendent of the Hawkinson Planing mills there. He returned to Rock Island in 1918 to take over similar duties with the J. Peterson firm.
Mr. Nelson married Miss Flora Huering in Rock Island forty-six years ago. Following her death he married Mrs. Anna Skeppstedt in Rock Island Dec. 23, 1933. Mr. Nelson was a member of the Galesburg Christian church.
Surviving are the widow; a daughter, Miss Ceicle M. Nelson; a son, A.J. Nelson; a stepson, Axel Skeppstedt, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Verna Nelson, all of Rock Island; a daughter, Mrs. May Evans of Dallas, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. Alma Jonson in Sweden; four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
The body was taken to Knox mortuary, Rock Island.
Funeral services will be held at 2 Tuesday afternoon in the mortuary. The Rev. Frederick J. Rolf will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.
