Dr. Edward Galbraith, senior warden of the St. Peter's Episcopal Church, officiated at the chapel of the Smith Funeral Home for Mrs. J. S. Wheless, 87, who passed away at her home on the Fredericksburg Road, Friday after several years' illness.
A native of Illinois, she had lived in Arkansas as a young woman where her father, the late Meade Fishback, served as the Governor of the State. She was married to the late Judge Wheless and they in Beaumont where he practiced law until his health failed. The family came to Kerrville in 1915, and Mrs. Wheless identified herself with the cultural, social and religious activities of the city. She was a member of the Episcopal Church, served as an officer in the Civic League, the Red Cross, and was a charter member of the Auxiliary to the American Legion.
Judge Wheless, who served as the mayor of Kerrville, and held other civic and service club offices, died in 1938. Mrs. Wheless continued to reside in Kerrville, and her brother, Louis Fishback, came here to make his home with her. For the last few years her daughter, Mrs. George Bollman, has been with her mother.
The survivors include four children, Mrs. Bollman, W. M. "Fishback" Wheless and Randolph Wheless of Houston and Sidney Wheless of Austin; a sister, Mrs. Guy Reed of Beaumont, and the brother; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren also survive.
Pallbearers were T. G. Harrison, Lloyd Luna, H. C. Holchak, Walter Relffert, Gober Gibson and H. T. Paul.
