John NORCOTT, Jr. was born August 4, 1787 in New London, New London Co., CT. He was the son of Capt. John NORCOTT and Alice BROOKS, daughter of Josiah and Bathsheba BROOKS of New London.

In 1808 John NORCOTT received his Seaman's Protection Certificate in the Customs District of New London. This certificate states that John was 5'6" tall and that he had lost his left thumb.

During the War of 1812 John, Jr. served as a sergeant for three months at the Garrison of Sag Harbor, Long Island, NY in the Company of Artillery commanded by Capt. Lodowick Post, in the Battalion commanded by Col. Benjamin Case, in the Thirty-Third Brigade of Infantry, Suffolk Co., commanded by Brig. Gen. Abraham Rose. John served as a Substitute for Sgt. Edward C. Rogers who had served about four weeks previously at the Garrison of Sag Harbor.

John then moved to New Jersey where he met and married Sarah LACY, daughter of Daniel LACY and Hannah VAN COURT of Elizabethtown, Essex Co., NJ. On September 4, 1818 John NORCOTT was the first petitioner for the Degree of Masonry at Jerusalem Lodge #40 in Plainfield, Essex Co., NJ. On Oct. 31, 1819 John and Sarah's first child, Ellison, was born in New Brunswick, Middlesex Co., NJ.

In 1820 John, Sarah and Ellison moved from New Jersey to Benton, Ontario (after 1823, Yates) Co., NY. (They had joined Sarah's parents and her brothers Silas and Nathan in this relocation.) The remainder of John and Sarah's children were born in Penn Yan, Yates Co., NY … Nathan, John, Sarah, Andrew, William, Henry and Charles. John served as a grocer in Penn Yan. In 1846 he was State Inspector of beef and pork for the village. John and Sarah were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Penn Yan.

On Oct. 7, 1862 Sarah NORCOTT died in Penn Yan. She was buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Penn Yan.

On December 7, 1875 John NORCOTT, Jr. died at age eighty-eight in Penn Yan. At the time he was living with his daughter-in-law, Harriet, her son Frank Pierce NORCOTT, and John's son Nathan. He was buried next to his wife Sarah at Lakeview Cemetery in Penn Yan.
