Canadian Politician. John Sandfield Macdonald, lawyer, was the first premier of Ontario. He served in the Legislature of the United Province of Canada from 1841 to 1867. He was Speaker in 1852 and Prime Minister from 1862 to 1864. When the Dominion of Canada was created in 1867, John S. Macdonald became the first Premier of Ontario, serving until after his coalition was defeated in the 1871 provincial general election.
