He first served in the United States Army during the Mexican War, being commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company A, 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteers.
When the Civil War began he immediately offered his services to preserve the Union, and was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 14th Pennsylvania (Three Month) Volunteer Infantry on April 30, 1861. He served with the unit until it was mustered out on August 7, 1861.
He returned to the Union war effort with a commission of Lieutenant Colonel, 53rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on November 7, 1861, and served in that duty until he was discharged on a Surgeon's certificate due to disability on May 19, 1864.
Feeling sufficiently recovered, he was commissioned once more as a Lieutenant Colonel, and was mustered into the 100-day enlistment regiment 193rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on July 24, 1861. He was mustered out with his regiment on November 6, 1864.
