William Franklin Weller was born in Baltimore County, probably near Granite which is shown often as Harrisonville in records of the family. He is the son of Joseph Weller of Thurmont, MD and grandson of John Jacob Weller "BS" who founded the town of Mechanicstown, now called Thurmont, MD. The Wellers were the first to manufacture friction strike matches in this country. The Weller house and other Weller structures still exist.

He married Wilhelmina Berryman in 1858, whose family is from Reisterstown.

In Granite Maryland are the Weller quarries, where Granite was produced, much of it going to build the structures and monuments in the region. The quarries imported skilled stone masons from Scotland and Ireland to produce Granite, which the town is named for.
