Enlisted, April 29, 1904, in Troop 3, Squadron A Cavalry, NYNG, New York City. Served through the ranks and commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, July 14, 1916; 1st Lieutenant, November 6, 1916, and Captain December 6, 1916.

Served on the Mexican border ,1916, with Troop C, Squadron A Cavalry. He commander Troop C, Squadron A Cavalry when in returned to New York.

On entering the World War he commanded Troop C, Squadron A Cavalry. When Squadron A reorganized for the World War as the 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division, he was transferred to Company A, 102 Military Police, 27th Division. Later transferred to the 308th Cavalry Regiment, then promoted to Major and assigned to the 65th Field Artillery, then attached to the 46th Field Artillery. Discharged from the service January 10, 1919.
