U.S. Senator. As a successful local figure in agricultural pursuits, he was elected as a delegate to the Virginia State secession convention in 1861 and refused to sign the ordinance of secession. After the Civil War, he was elected as a Republican the 9th Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, serving 1869-70. Upon the readmission of the State of Virginia to representation, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving 1870-75. Not a candidate for reelection, he was appointed by Presidents Ulysses Grant and Rutherford Hayes, as U.S. Marshal for the western district of Virginia, serving 1875-82. In 1882, he was again was elected as a Republican the 14th Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, serving until 1886. After his term, he retired from politics and resumed agricultural pursuits until his death.
