Rebecca Cheney Stoneman -
Daughter of George Stoneman, Sr., and Catherine Rebecca Cheney. Both parents of English descent. They had eight children who reached adulthood, four sons and four daughters. Their eldest child, a son, Major General George Stoneman, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point; distinguished cavalry officer in the Civil War, and afterwards Governor of the State of California. Rebecca Cheney, was their fifth child and first daughter. She was schooled in her primary grades at the Jamestown Academy. In 1854 she entered Troy Seminary. She remained single, devoting herself to the profession of teaching. In later years she joined the Stoneman family in California, where she tutored the Stoneman children. She made a home for herself in Alhambra, Los Angeles county, California, where she cultivated an orange orchard, and established a Women's Library and Reading Room. It was in Alhambra that she died on the 9 September 1891, in her 57th year. Interment was in the Stoneman family plot at Bentley Cemetery in Lakewood, Chautauqua County, New York.
