Emil Niemann, ex-mayor, dies
Native citian had delivered milk in town 32 years
William Emil Niemann, long-time Nebraska City milkman who served as his town's mayor after he retired from the route he traveled for 32 years, died at St. Mary's hospital Tuesday night at 6:30.
Mr. Niemann, one of the community's most loved men, died after an illness of several months with Parkinson's disease. He was 73 years old and a native.
Mr. Niemann retired in 1943 after having delivered milk, first with a horse and wagon, for 32 years. He first worked for the Bone dairy and later for himself. For 28 of those years he labored seven days a week, starting at 4 a.m. without missing a single day on his route.
The Nebraska Citian delivered milk for untold thousands of babies. During the depression he "forgot" to collect at a good many homes, insuring through his own kindness that the youngsters of unemployed families would have their basic food.
After his retirement Mr. Niemann was elected mayor of Nebraska City for the 1944-45 term. Two of the accomplishments during that two-year span were city acquisition of the utility system and removal of the dump from the river front to the site northwest of town which Mr. Niemann selected.
During recent years Mr. Niemann was a member of the Wyuka cemetery board, the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary club.
He was born March 10, 1887, in Nebraska City, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Niemann. In 1917 he married Ethel Hollabaugh.
He was a member of the Presbyterian church and the Masonic lodge.
Surviving are Mrs. Niemann, a son, Harold, Denver, and three grandchildren, Brand, Gary and Sherry.
Also surviving are brothers, Henry of St. Louis, and Paul of Nebraska City and sisters, Louise Bone, Minnie Niemann and Emma Brust, all of Nebraska City. A brother, Fred, preceded him.
Funeral services will be held at 10 30 a.m. Friday, July 22, at the Peterson mortuary with Rev. Sam Hofer officiating. Burial will be at Wyuka.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Coslett of Hamburg, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Severa, Omaha, and Henry Niemann of St. Louis will attend the funeral.
The family suggested memorials at the city clerk's office for the installation of a drinking fountain or a picnic shelter at Steinhart Park.
