Add PhotosIn April 1802, a committee was appointed by the mayor and one John Beatty to buy a place for the burial of the poor of the city. The original tract was purchased by the city in 1804 for burials, it was two acres of land. It was acquired from Nathan Beakes. It was on Brunswick Avenue (then Brunswick Road) near Paul Avenue.
In 1836 the common council set aside a portion "for the interment of the colored population of the city." The graveyard subsequently served inmates from the nearby city poorhouse, town indigents and Civil War-era smallpox epidemic victims. Prior to 1884, when the land was sold to a developer, it had become an overcrowded and overgrown eyesore. Many wagonloads of remains (but not all) were removed to a new municipal cemetery on Hamilton Avenue, Hamilton Township, subsequently Chase Street was cut through the center of the former tract and dwellings were erected thereon. This place was early known as Potters Field and as Gallows Hill Cemetery; the name was officially established as City Cemetery in 1861.
The cemetery was eventually abandoned and leaves no marking whatsoever to indicate that it ever existed.
