Sutherland Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery, with the adjacent Rogers/Dailey Cemetery, is one of the oldest Methodist burial grounds in the district. Until the 1950s it was all one cemetery.
In 1835 Thomas Sutherland and his wife Sarah gave 1/4 acre of their land at Lot 6, Concession 8, West Gwillimbury Township, to the Weslayan Methodist Congregation for the consideration of 10 shillings. This gift for a church and cemetery fulfilled a pledge they had made in Ireland to help build a church if they succeeded in establishing a farm in the new country. A small church was built, and later in 1876, a brick church was erected.
In 1887 the Church purchased an adjoining piece of land for $1 from William Barber. After the United Church of Canada was formed in 1925, Sutherland's was closed. The building was taken down in the early 1930s.
The Sutherland Church was situated at the front of the lot, and the monuments were at the rear. The few remaining stones are hidden deep in the lilac bushes, most are broken or nearly lost beneath the soil--it's quite neglected and sad. The inscriptions were inventoried and transcribed by the local historical society in the early 1990s; photos posted to the memorials herein were taken in Sept 2010.
In the 1950s, Major Edgar Rogers of Winnipeg took over the east section of the cemetery, dividing it from the Sutherland side with a wire fence and installing stone pillars and an iron gate at the road. Both sides of the grounds are now inactive and, as an abandoned cemetery, are under the jurisdiction of the Township.
