Histon is one of 3 cemeteries designs by John Claudis Loudon and is an example of early grid system layouts later adopted by other cemeteries. It is approximately 1 hectare in size, There are over 3500 burial spaces, 8200 interred here but less than 1500 surviving Monuments, many unreadable.
There are approximately 2500 children buried at Histon, 1500 under the age of one. Histon Cemetery opened in 1843 and is one of the first British Cemeteries that was open to everyone and coincidentally, the year of John Loudon's death. Originally a chapel was on the property but was in disrepair and demolished in 1950's.
The main entrance is located off Histon Road next to a Victorian Period Lodge which was part of the original cemetery but now is a private residence. A common pathway from this entrance to second entrance on Victoria Road is used frequently by the local residences.
From 2007 the cemetery has been run by Cambridge City Council, working with The Friends Group of Histon Cemetery. There is a unpublished transcriptions register compiled by Lucy Slater and is deposited at the Cambridge Record Office.
