Captain Jonathan Parker Plantation Burial Ground
Clinton, Sampson County, North Carolina, USA
The burial ground is in Clinton (Taylor's Bridge) and near the intersections of Union School and Williamson Roads, one-quarter mile north of what was the Claude Powell home in 1943.
The privately published "Parker Genealogy, Six Runs Creek, Sampson County, North Carolina (Taylors Bridge Area), Lt. Robert Wallace Parker, 1943 " provides the following directions:
· ¼ mile north of Mr. Claude Powell's house and 150 yards east of Six Runs Creek Road
· 7 miles southeast of Clinton on 431, then turn left 2.5 miles east on Mt. Gilead Road bearing to the right at all intersections
· This intersection is 1 ¼ mile south of Holly Grove Church and 2 miles north of Dr. J. O. Mathew's residence
· Powell House is 100 yards off Six Runs Creek Road and ¼ mile south of the dirt road and Six Runs Creek Road
· Parker Cemetery is located ¼ mile north of Mr. Claude Powell's house and 150 yard east of Six Runs Creek Road.
Using a modern map, descendant John Murlin found the present intersection and has identified it as very close to what is now East Gilead Church Road and Union School Road. It is 100 yards of Union School Road not far from the intersection with East Gilead Church Road.
From this information the exact location is Latitude 34°52'49.07"N and Longitude 78°14'19.54"W . When looking at the map, keep in mind the area where the creek crosses the creek is not a bridge, it is a culvert. One could leave the car at this point and walk along the north side of the creek about 450 feet and look in this area. The going could be difficult so it might be easier to walk along the edge of the woods about 450 feet and then search that area along the creek which is wooded.
A little history on the burial ground:
Our long deceased cousin, Robert Wallace Parker, a historian, genealogist and descendant of Jonathan Parker, had the intention permanently marking the graves with the permission of Claude Powell (the owner of part of Jonathan Parker's plantation in 1943 where the grave yard is located. Robert Parker states that as a child, Mrs. Horace Peterson remembered that the graves originally had pine markers with the names carved in, which had disintegrated long before 1943. 8 or 9 interments were unmarked as of 1943. Many years prior to 1943, there were vertical pine markers which were no longer there. The graves were 6 feet long and the earth was sunken 6 inches. As of 1943, there was a plan by Robert Wallace Parker to remark the graves. This graveyard has been forgotten twice. The first time the pine markers of the original 8-9 graves disintegrated about the turn of the century.
5 of the 8 or possibly 9 people are identified buried there are listed in his 1943 report are as follows:
· Jonathan Parker 1761- 1806 - plans to have a Revolutionary marker installed
· Peyton R. Parker - War of 1812 and son of Jonathan
· Richard Parker 1780-1836 - son of Jonathan
· Zachariah Parker 1791-1863 War of 1812 and son of Richard
· Zephaniah Parker 1793-1853- War of 1812 and son of Richard
