Am Domplatz
A-5020 Salzburg
AUSTRIA
The first Romanic cathedral at this location was built in 775 A.D. Enlarged and changed in architectoral styles over the next few hundred years the current building was constructed between 1614 and 1628. It is almost famous for its 10 fires over the past 1000 years. The latest in 1944 during WW II destroyed the dome. The last rebuilding of this church was from 1945 to 1959. It is dedicated to St. Virgil and St. Rupert.
The main nave is 101 m long, the main side nave 68 m wide. The dome above the main nave is 79 m high, the two towers reach a height of 81 m. Inside, the church has 18 altars, 5 organs (the most in any European church) and it seats about 10,000 people.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's parents were married in this church, he himself was baptized there. Later in life his compositions were performed here for the first time. Mozart wrote several pieces for four organs and orchestra, hence the reason for the many organs in this church.
There is a Crypt of Bishops underneath the north-eastern end of the cathedral. It is cut right into the bedrock of the mountain and those rocks are exposed throughtout the crypt. There is also a small chapel inside the crypt. The remains of some former bishops of Salzburg have been re-interred from other burial grounds in 2000-2003. All the graves are in niches inside the walls of the crypt.
