Weleetka, the townsite, was opened in 1902. The area was part of the Creek Nation, Indian Territory. Oklahoma was ceded into the Union in 1907. Hillcrest is the largest cemetery in Weleetka, and the oldest marker found was dated 31 May 1903, belonging to J.W. Fletcher. His marker is in the oldest section which is the Center section East Wall.
Citizens of Weleetka have taken a lot of pride in this cemetery. Many graves are marked with common markers. Markers made of cement blocks with metal stamped bands with the person's name. Two of the common markers has identified Ira N Starns as Weleetka's first citizen, and Mary Lawley Clarke as Co founder of Weleetka. Every effort has been made to identify graves. The cemetery is in excellent shape. A rock wall on three sides of the cemetery was built by the WPA.
This cemetery is owned and maintained by the city of Weleetka. Additional information on records of names, and locations of graves can be obtained by the City Clerk at 1-405-786-2716.
