Mitzel /Muetzel/Mützel

Descendants of Jacob Mitzel (born @1700) and his wife Maria Barbara (@1700--1765) of Zuzenhausen, Baden, Germany. Original church documents have either Mützel or Mitzel - depending on the pastor recording the event. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jacob was a master shoemaker who passed his trade down to his sons. The family grew and spread out to the neighboring town of Meckesheim. One by one the descendants of Jacob and Barbara emigrated- to the United States, Southern Russia (now called the Ukraine), Argentina. Very few remained in Germany; moving to Weisenbach, Heidelburg and elsewhere. The last Mitzel born in Zuzenhausen was Charles (Carl) Muetzel, born 21 Dec 1878. He came to America with his father in 1881, and died in Bedford, Ohio in 1960. The last Mitzel born in Meckesheim was born in 1847. That child died two days later. Although church records are available up until about 1965 - there are no Mitzel's after the last death in 1933 (Katharina Mitzel Muller). This Katharina's father emigrated in 1881 and died in Cleveland, Ohio in 1909. Various family members altered the original spellings of either Mützel or Mitzel to include Muetzel, Mitchell and one family Metzel.
