The Funeral of Walter S Gordon

Atlanta, October 19 - The remains of Walter S Gordon, brother of Governor John B Gordon, reached this city from New York at 12:40 to-day by the Air Line railroad. They were accompanied by members of the family of the deceased and a number of friends. The weeping widow was assisted from the train by her father and Governor Gordon. Her grief was heartrending.

About sixty graduates of the State University, among them several classmates of the dead, formed lines in the union depot, through with the following pall-bearers bore the body to the hearse: Messrs. Donald Bain, Ludovick Hill, Howell Jackson, William Dickson, H W Grady, B H Hill, Jr., Judge Howard Van Epps, Dr. Robert Ridley, Judge William Newman, and Messrs. Walter Taylor, Albert Cox and Jack Johnson.

A great crowd collected as the procession formed. The procession was headed by the Governor's Horse Guard on foot, proceeded by a band, and followed by the State University men and a long line of carriages.

The funeral services took place at the Second Baptist church on Washington street. The church was crowded. After appropriate selections of the choir, Doctor McDonald, pastor of the church, preached a most impressive sermon from the text, "If a man dies shall he live again." The procession then marched to Oakland, where at 3 o'clock all that was mortal of Walter S Gordon was laid to rest.
