U.S. Continental Congressman, U.S. Senator. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and then studied in England, (1773 to 1776). There he joined other Americans in London, in 1774, in a petition against the Boston port bill. Returning to the Colonies, he served as an Army officer in South Carolina, in various military and civil capacities during the Revolutionary War. He was sent with other Americans as a prisoner of the British to St. Augustine, (1780 to 1781). After being released, he was a member of the South Carolina State Assembly, in 1782 and on the Privy Council, in 1783. In 1883, he was elected a member of the Continental Congress, serving until 1885. In addition, he also served as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, (1782 to 1794). In 1795, he was elected as a Federalist to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1801. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he practiced law and was a planter on his plantation until his death.
