Christine Bertha Van Dyke
Mrs. Christine Bertha Van Dyke, widow of the late C. B. Van Dyke, died last Friday in Chicago, where she had been taken by her sons for medical treatment.
Mis. Van Dyke was one of the oldest and best known residents in this part of Douglas county.
Her maiden name was Christine Solum.
She was born in Sigdal, Norway, in. 1850. She was
the oldest child of Lars O, and Gunor? Solum, with whom she came to this country shortly after the Civil War, and to Alexandria in 1867. In 1871 the deceased was married to Chester B. Van Dyke with whom she lived happily until his death in September, 1903.
During the same year (?!) she was called upon to follow to the grave her husband, her father and her mother. Eight sons survive the deceased, one daughter having died years ago.
The sons are Aaron Milton Van Dyke of Rolla, N. D., Lafayette Van Dyke of Alexandria, Carl C. Van Dyke of St. Paul, Cleve W. Van Dyke of Bisbee, Arizona, John H. Van Dyke of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Arthur A. Van Dyke at the state, university, and Leslie D. and Raymond S. Van Dyke who lived at home and attended school here. Besides the sons, three brothers, Anton Solem of Nelson, Julius Solem of Osakis and Ole Solem of Ashby, and three sisters, Mrs. Olof Solum of Alexandria and Mrs. John Scott and Mrs. Nels Sather, who live near, Nelson, survive the deceased.
Mrs. Van Dyke was pre-eminently a home woman. Her home and her family were her first and only thought and for her children she lived. She seldom went out, only among a close circle of friends and relatives. A loving mother, a kind friend and neighbor, she will be greatly missed, especially her sons.
The funeral services were held Sunday morning at 11 :30 o'clock from the Norwegian Lutheran church, the Rev. B. A. Benson officiating. The pail bearers were the eight sons.
The interment was in Kinkead cemetery beside the remains of her husband.
Dr. Olson, of St. James, Minn. a college friend of C. W. Van Dyke, Fred Englund, of Aberdeen, S. D., Miss Clara Englund, of Warren and Miss Ida Englund, of Cyrus, attended the funeral.
The house will be kept open as a home for Leslie and Ray, who will finish their school work here.
