Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Presidential Cabinet Member. Born in Lancaster, Ohio, he was a lawyer in practice when commissioned a First Lieutenant and adjutant in the 3rd Iowa Cavalry. Promoted Colonel, he took part in the battles of Pea Ridge, Vicksburg and the Atlanta Campaign. For meritorious services, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he served as the US District Attorney of Eastern Missouri, 1867 to 1870 and was appointed US Secretary of the Interior by President Benjamin Harrison in 1889, serving until 1893.
