U.S. Senator. Born in either Virginia or Ohio, he was a Baptist Minister in various Baptist congregations in Virginia and Ohio by 1790. He was a member of the Ohio Northwest Territorial Legislature, (1799-1803) and upon the admission of Ohio as a State into the Union, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1803-08). Due to charges of alleged complicity in Vice President Aaron Burr’s treason case, he reluctantly resigned from the US Senate. He died at age 88 in St. Francisville, Louisiana, but his final burial site has become lost to history.
