Judge Joseph H Budd died at his home in Stockton on Sunday evening last after an illness of several months. He was a native of New York and aged 80 years. When death came his wife and son, John E Budd, with other members of the family, were at the bedside, ex-Governor James H Budd being in Washington.
Judge Budd's early life was spent in his native State. In 1843 he was graduated at the head of a large class from Williams College. The study of law was taken up in Poughkeepsie, and in 1847 he was admitted to the bar. The young attorney removed at once to Janesville, Wis where he practiced his profession with some success. He met Miss L M Ash of Magnolia, Wis, and was married to her in June 1849. Judge Budd came to California by way of the Isthmus in July 1858 and was followed five months later by his wife and two sons, James H Budd and John E Budd.
As a jurist Judge Budd was considered to have but few equals in the West. His decisions have rarely been reversed by the Supreme Court and have been quoted generally as model interpretations of the law. Judge Budd frequently held court in Merced for Judge Law and was well known here.
Judge Budd left almost no property. Some time ago he deeded his real property to his wife. In his will he bequeaths his few personal effects to his sons. The remains were taken to San Francisco and cremated.
