Martha Melissa Evans was born in Tennessee and later moved with her family to Marshall, Texas. Her father was a physician and a wealthy planter. Even though Martha Melissa Evans was one of fourteen children, she grew up in as much luxury and comfort as the time and conditions in early Texas afforded.

Martha Melissa Evans was Governor Edward Clark's second wife. She was the daughter of William Evans, who was the first physician in Marshall, and Nancy Wilson Davidson.

"Married on the 26th ult. in this place by the Rev. N.W. Burks, Maj. Edward Clark to Miss Martha Evans, dau of Dr. Evans, all of this place."


Martha outlived her husband by several years and at her death was buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Edward and Martha (Evans) Clark had 5 children:

1. William Evans Clark - (b. apr 1849) Bible record says he died June 1852, age 3 years, 2 months, 19 days.
2. John Evans Clark (Jan 30, 1853-1923) m. (1) Leila Price on 7 Dec 1887, who died in childbirth in 1890 with her second child. The only surviving child was Patsy Kinniard Clark, (b. Oct. 1888), who never married.
He married (2) Juanita Henrietta Miller on 3 July 1893 and they had four children:
A. John Milton Clark (1894-1949)
B.William Edward Clark (1896-1907) died young of appendicitis
C. Margaret Reid Clark (1897-1958)
D. Oliver Hartsill Clark (1899-1969) - He was president of the First National Bank in Marshall in 1949.
3. William Alfred Clark -b. 1853; died at age 26; m. Ida Wallenstein Hull of Carthage; one son, Thomas Alfred Clark (1879-1933)
4. Nancy M. Clark (1855-1913) m. Daniel C. Wallace, 1882 in Marshall. They had two children: Evans Wallace and Eugene Blocker Wallace.
