Nancy Forney was the daughter of Peter and Nancy Abernathy Forney. She was born, probably at Mt. Welcome, Peter & Nancy's home in Lincoln Co., NC in 1803. 0n 3 Oct 1820 she married Dr. William Johnston (b. 1790 in Oak Grove, Lincoln Co., NC, d. 30 Sep 1854 in Lincoln Co., NC). In 1834 William Johnston inherited the Mt. Welcome home and the Mt. Welcome Forge from his father-in-law Peter Forney.

Nancy & William had 12 children all born in Lincoln Co., NC. Several of them moved to Alabama. In 1857, 3 years after Nancy became a widow, her daughter Annie C. Johnston Calloway's husband also died. Not too long after, Nancy & Annie came to Alabama to live near Nancy's other children. Nancy was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery on 26 Jul 1891 in a plot owned by her son Joseph's father-in-law William Hooper. On 15 May 1917, she and several others of the Johnston family were removed from Oak Hill and re-interred in Elmwood Cemetery in her grandson Forney Johnston's plot.
