Norman Brainerd, a son of Ezra Brainerd and Mabel Porter, was raised in Carthage, Jefferson County, New York. He labored with his father on the Carthage bridge, and soon after moved to Holley, New York, and from there to Hartland, Livingston County, Michigan. He was a farmer and kept the town poor of the county. He was the justice of the peace for 22 years.

Norman married Grace Kent, daughter of Silas Kent of Brighton, New York, on June 6, 1823. They had nine children:

1) Norman Porter Brainerd (1824-1850), who married Cornelia Jenks;
2) Edwin Erastus Brainerd (1825-1892), whose first wife was Martha C. Haines, second wife was Mary A. Haines, and third wife was Jennie J. Weeks;
3) Julia Brainerd (1827-?), who married Oliver Warren;
4) Lorenzo L. Brainerd (1830-1834);
5) Elvira Mabel Brainerd (1832-1902);
6) Emily Brainerd (1835-1890);
7) Morris Dutcher Brainerd (1837-1896), whose first wife was Laura J. ________, second wife was Sarah G. Weeks, and third wife was Mary E. Weeks;
8) John Wesley Brainerd (1840-1922), who married Leora Adelaide Hildebrant;
9) Silas Kent Brainerd (1843-?) Died young.

Obituary from Livingston County, Michigan newspaper:

"Mr. Brainerd was well known as one of the early settlers of our county. He commenced his home, where he lived and died, in the forest, with only Indians for his neighbors and Indian trails for public roads. He built the first log house in the village of Hartland. He ever evinced a deep interest in whatever concerned the public good. He assisted in the organization of the first school district in the town, was at the first religious meeting, and aided in the establishment of the first Christian Church. He was at the first and every funeral in his neighborhood while he lived. He was chosen deacon of the Congregational Church, which office he held during life. These few facts are an index of his general character. His death was truly a public loss and a deep affliction to his bereaved family."

Mr. Norman Brainerd died September 13, 1852, in Hartland. Mrs. Grace (Kent) Brainerd died January 19, 1892, aged 88 years, in Vassar, Michigan, and was buried in Hartland by the side of her husband.
