Arkansas Governor. Born into a political family, his older brothers were U.S. Congressman Henry H. Conway and James S. Conway, the first Governor of Arkansas. Educated in surveying at the Bonne Femme Academy Missouri, he moved to Arkansas, in 1833, and was appointed as the Arkansas State Auditor, serving (1835-49). In 1852, he was elected as a Democrat the 5th Governor of Arkansas, serving until 1860. During his administration, the office of state geologist was created, major physical improvements were made in the state, also in the state penitentiary, grants were given to the state's railroad system and the state's solvency treasury held a surplus. After leaving office at the end of his second term, he lived in retirement until his death at age 79.
