He was the son of Senator George W. Jones of Iowa.
They were the parents of six children.
On the 1880 Census for Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa, his marital status was Divorced.
They were the parents of Josephine Jones born about 1864 in Virginia, Katharine Stribling Jones Dawson [born about 1867 at Virginia; died April 3, 1953] and George W. Jones. Another daughter married Maynard Bayles.

Johnson, September 7, 1863 to July 21, 1864. Jones went on to serve under Johnson in the early stages of the Petersburg campaign in Virginia. Captured at Drewry's Bluff, May 17, 1864. Jones was finally exchanged March 4, 1865. He died in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa, January 1890. His father was United States Minister to Colombia and Governor of Iowa.] She lived at one time post-bellum in Washington, D.C.

George Wallace Jones, born in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, 1869; he is connected with the Post Office Department in Washington, D.C.
Mary Taliaferro Jones, born Dubuque, Iowa, September 23, 1871 [died June 1918 at New York City]; married Washington, D.C. July 3, 1895, John Josephus Lordan (born Galveston, Galveston County, Texas; he was a lawyer in New York City). They resided in New York, New York, where he resided alone on the 1920 census.
