"DEATH OF A SOUTHERN EDITOR

Capt. William Griffin Waller, who died at Rockbridge Alum Springs, Virginia, Tuesday night was a well known journalist, and had done valuable work on a number of Southern newspapers. After the war, in which he served with credit on the Confederate side, he became managing editor of the Savannah (Ga) Morning News, and subsequently city editor of the Richmond (Va) Whig. In 1888 he was made managing editor of the Richmond Times, and remained on the editorial staff of that paper until about a year ago, when ill-health compelled his withdrawal from journalistic work. Captain Waller was a native of Williamsburg, Va and was fifty-one years of age. His mother was Miss Lizzie Tyler, a daughter of President John Tyler. Captain Waller's first wife was Miss Jeannie Howell, a sister of Mrs. Jefferson Davis. They were married in the White House of the Confederacy during the war, their wedding having been the only one solemnized there."

Their marriage is noted in the book "America's First Families...", Carl Sferrazza Anthony, 2000
