U.S. Senator. Moving to Pontotoc County, Mississippi, he became successful engaging in planting on his plantation. In November 1838, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of James F. Trotter, serving until November 1839 when he was defeated to fill the full term. After leaving the Senate, he served as secretary-treasurer of the University of Mississippi, from 1845, until his death and was known as "Father of the State University."
