U.S. Senator. He attended Hallowell Academy, then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1804 and commenced to practice law in Augusta, Maine. Entering politics, he served as a member of the Maine State legislature, (1812-29, 32), commissioner of public buildings in 1831 and a presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1836. In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Ether Shepley, serving until he resigned in 1843. While in the Senate, he served as chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Naval Affairs. After leaving the Senate, he was a manager of a railroad until his death. His son Joseph H. Williams, was the 27th Governor of Maine and also a U.S. Senator.
