"Mary Ann McLaren was born April 13, 1832, to John and Nancy McLaren of Nelson, Ontario. She married Andrew T. Pickett April 13, 1858, and later followed him in 1870 to Vermillion, Clay County, South Dakota, where he had sought a new home for them. She died there September (or December) 3, 1875. Three of Andrew's and her children survived to adulthood: Mary Anna Hopkins (mother of Roosevelt's adviser Harry Hopkins), Eleanor J. "Ella" Whitlow, and John Thomas Pickett. Two additional children died as infants in South Dakota."
