Cornelius McLean Stoneman -
Son of Major General George Stoneman, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point; distinguished cavalry officer in the Civil War and afterwards Governor of the State of California. His mother was Mary Oliver Hardisty, who was once prominent in Baltimore society. They had four children, two sons and two daughters. Cornelius was their eldest child. His education in the primary grades was in California. As a young man in 1881 he removed to San Francisco, working at the Union Iron Works, as a machinist. He later held the position of engineer at the State Printing Office in Sacramento during the tenure of James J. Ayers, as State Printer, which coincided with his father's term in office as Governor of California. In the engine room was a forty-five horse power Wheelock automatic engine, cylinder 12 X 30 inches, which made seventy-five revolutions per minute. It was built by the Pacific Iron Works, in San Francisco. The engine was supplied by an improved boiler. All the motive power was constructed under the supervision of C. M. Stoneman, engineer and machinist. In 1884 he was at the State Fair in Sacramento, State Agriculture and Industrial Exposition, Machinery Hall, as assistant engineer, to David Stark. Here the new engine was being displayed who's construction Cornelius had supervised. In 1888-89, and again in 1893, he was registered as a engineering student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in Cambridge. In 1899 he removed to Seattle, Washington, taking employment as engineer at the Madison Street Power House. Later employed at the Post Street station of the Seattle Electric Company. In 1902 he was employed for two years at the Seattle Cereal Mill Company, as night engineer, when sadly he took his own life on Tuesday, 9 August 1904, at 42 years of age, in Seattle, King County, Washington. He was predeceased by his father, Major General George Stoneman, former Governor of California. Survived by his beloved mother, Mary Oliver (Hardisty) Stoneman, of Baltimore; two sisters, Katharine Cheney Stoneman, of California, and Adele Stoneman, of New York; and one brother, George John Stoneman, Esq., of Arizona. Interment was at Lake View Cemetery, Seattle, King County, Washington. (bio by: Judy Froehlich)
