Maria was born in Maryland about 1819. She married Robert Chatham Ewing on November 9, 1841 and they had seven children, Ella, Roberta, Norma, Clarence, Minnie, Finetta, and Robert. In 1860, the family was living in Lexington, Missouri. By 1880, Maria was living in Deer Lodge, Montana enumerated with her son-in-law, John C. and Ella (Ewing) Robinson, their three children and Maria's daughter, Fanny. On December 25, 1896, at age 81, Maria died at her home at 204 Breckenridge in Helena after a long illness. Three years before her death, a paralytic stroke rendered her helpless; a third stroke resulted in her death. Her attending physician was Treacy. Her funeral was held from the Episcopal Church. (Helena Independent, 12/27/1896) She is buried in Section A, Row 6, in the Biggs plot. Her tombstone is inscribed "Asleep in Jesus."

Note: "Death of General Ewing. General Ewing, the first recorder of Lewis and Clark County, died at Deer Lodge yesterday morning at 8 o'clock. He was on his way from New Mexico to Helena to visit Col. W. F. Chadwick and family, he being the father of Mrs. Chadwick. Deceased was well known and greatly respected throughout the Territory, and his death will be heard of with general regret." (Helena Independent, 9/2/1883) "Died. Ewing – At Deer Lodge, at the residence of John C. Robinson, Sept. 1st. 1883, Robert C. Ewing, aged sixty-seven years." (Helena Independent, 9/4/1883)
