Henry Acke, 61, ended his own life by hanging this morning in the basement of an abandoned house at the rear of his residence, 2806 Tenth avenue. Mr. Acke until recently had been employed at the Deere & Co. lumber yard.
Neighbors said he had not worked for about two months and that prior to that time he had been ill of pneumonia. They said he apparently had been despondent because he had not recovered as rapidly as he thought he should. About three weeks ago, police said, they prevented the man from throwing himself in front of a train.
William Johannsen, who lives at 2808 Tenth avenue, cut the body down after Mrs. Acke discovered her husband hanging in the basement of the abandoned house. She said he left the house about 8 this morning and apparently went directly to the basement of the deserted house and ended his life.
Mr. Acke was born Sept. 23, 1880, in Lavendengen, Belgium. He came to America, directly to Moline, in 1912. He married Camille Jughtems in Rock Island on Dec. 31, 1925. Mr Acke was employed by Deere & Co. in their limber yards for about twenty years.
Mr. acke was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church and East End Bolders' club.
Surviving are the widow; one brother, Julius of Michigan, and one sister and two brothers in Belgium. One sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 8:30 Monday morning in DeRoo funeral home and at 9 in Sacred Heart Catholic church. The Rev. Paul Kinder will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery.
Rosary will be recited at 7:30 Sunday night in DeRoo funeral home. Inquest into the death was to be held this afternoon in the funeral home.
