The family then returned to Christiana (Oslo) where two more children were born: Olaf and Marie. Alma had an older sister, Bertine, who lived with her mother’s brother while the family was in Sweden.
In 1879 when Alma was 7, her father went to NY to earn money. He was homesick and wanted to return to Norway, but the next year his wife sold their restaurant in Oslo, packed up 4 of their 5 children and headed to NY. (Bertine insisted on staying with her uncle’s family.)
After 3 years in New York, the family moved to Chicago where Alma continued attending elementary school and then worked as a hat maker. She wanted to go to high school but needed to work.
As a young woman Alma and her family attended Bethel Lutheran Church where she met her future husband, John Westberg. Both of them were very active in the church, singing in the choir and much more.
Alma and John had 4 children: Viola, Eulalia (Lael), Orville, and Granger.
Alma lived to be 96 years old. Her husband died at age 87.
