Civil War Confederate Army Officer, US Senator. In 1878, he was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat from Arkansas and served from 1879 to 1885. Previously, he had been a Colonel of the 4th regiment for the Arkansas Infantry for the Confederacy during the Civil War. He was captured in Oak Hills, Missouri and imprisoned for 2 years.
