Motion Picture Cinematographer. The younger brother of Russian directors Dziga Vertov and Mikhail Kaufman, he emigrated to France in 1927 and taught himself cinematography with the aid of some correspondence from Vertov. He was cameraman for all four of director Jean Vigo's films: "Apropos De Nice" (1930), "Taris" (1931), "Zero For Conduct" (1933), and "L'Atalante" (1934). Kaufman settled in the United States in 1942 and won an Oscar for "On The Waterfront" (1954).
