Struck Over Head With Club By Victor Anderson, Bar Tender, Dies at Swedish Hospital
A backroom in the rear of the saloon , opposite City Hall on East Ludington Street, was the scene of
a row which resulted in the killing of Oscar Johnson between 5 and 6 o'clock last Thursday afternoon.
According to the evidence at the inquest, the killing was done by Victor Anderson.
According to the evidence, Johnson, who had spent the greater portion of the day in the saloon,
in an intoxicated condition, engaged in an altercation with Anderson. Anderson was attempting to
eject Johnson from the saloon by the rear entrance. Anderson was arrested soon after Johnson was removed to the hospital & lodged in the county jail.
Johnson was married & had become the father of a son - his first child, the same morning he was killed. He is also survived by a father in Sweden, 2 brothers, Herman 100292528 & a sister.
He had served with Company E, 34th Michigan Volunteers in Cuba during the Spanish American War, afterwards enlisting in the United States Army serving in the Philippines for 3 years.
