U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Moving to Kentucky, he studied law and was the Mason County court clerk, until 1803. Moving to Lawrenceburg, Indiana Territory in 1803, he was admitted to the bar and practiced law. He was appointed Deputy Attorney General of Indiana Territory, in 1805 and a member of the Territorial House of Representatives, (1805-08). In 1808, he was elected as a Delegate from Indiana Territory to the Tenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Benjamin Parke, serving until 1809. Relocating to Edwardsville, Illinois, upon the organization of Illinois Territory, he was appointed judge of the United States court for the northwestern judicial district, serving (1809-18). Upon the admission of Illinois as a State into the Union in 1818, he was elected as a Democratic Republican the first U.S. Senator from Illinois, reelected as a Crawford Republican serving until 1829. Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he retired to Ohio and lived until committing suicide.
