U.S. Senator. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1910, from its law department in 1912, admitted to the bar in 1912 and commenced to practice law in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. During World War I, he served as a Major in the United States Army, (1917-19). After the war, he resumed the practice of law and was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving (1933-39). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed district judge for the eastern district of Wisconsin, serving (1939-49). He became chief judge of the US court of appeals for the seventh circuit, serving (1954-59) and retired as a senior judge of the court in 1966.
