US Congressman, Presidential Cabinet Member, North Carolina Governor, US Senator. Elected to represent North Carolina's 5th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1831 to 1833. Also served as a Member of the North Carolina State Senate in 1811, 1813 to 1817, and 1834, Governor of North Carolina from 1817 to 1820, Federal Judge in 1822, United States Senator from North Carolina from 1823 to 1829, United States Secretary of the Navy from 1829 to 1831, Delegate to the North Carolina State Constitutional Convention in 1835, and Governor of Florida Territory from 1844 to 1845.
