US Representative from Alabama. He was graduated from South Carolina College, now the University of South Carolina, at Columbia in 1808 and served as clerk of the State senate 1810 to 1817. He moved to Alabama in 1818, was delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1819, studied law and was admitted to the bar. In 1822 he was a member of the State senate, Governor of Alabama, 1825 to 1829 and elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-third Congress, March 4, 1833 to March 3, 1835. Unsuccessful as a candidate for election he returned to his plantation near Gosport, Alabama where stayed until his death.
